974 Saints Preserve Us.

Apparently my oldest email account, the very first one I ever had, got hacked. Which is a pretty good record considering how many people I know who’ve had their stuff swiped. The good news is that it’s mostly unconnected to the comic stuff. The bad news is that I used it for Paypal because of that. That way it was harder for people to want to go snooping there. I sent an email to get it recovered, but dissconnected it from all my accounts anyway. All the people who ever used it to contact me have long sinced stopped bothering, so it’s no great loss. It’s annoying though, because it was kind of an archive for past stuff, and transactions. I hope I can get it back for that at least. That account is so old that the only contact email they had on record for it was a Yahoo mail I deleted 5 years ago. XD When they asked me to choose from a list of emails to send the recovery info to I was like “…well that won’t work.” I never connected it to another account specifically because I thought the comic’s stuff would be in greater danger of attack. The account itself looks like a spam account. If a person didn’t know it was me they’d think it was just another Nigerian prince.

One problem I’ve had with all of this though, is with Apple. Since their solution to most of my problems in the last few years as been “Just make a new apple ID!” I don’t have any free email accounts to switch my main to. When I was trying to set up face time on my ipod there was some kind of glitch so I had to attatch it to a new account. It happened again when I got the new one. It happened again when I tried to set up an account on my mom’s iPad… Apparently it’s a known problem. Because when we went to the help thing that’s what it said to do. Long short I have no email to switch to.

My day has not gone according to plan.

did you read about the reporter for Wired Mag? He got hacked to rat shit, due in no small part to his trusting Apple to an insane degree, followed by Apple handing his account info over to the hackers(!!).

Yeah, I saw part of that. Never read the whole thing even thought I meant to. I know you have to be careful with all that stuff.

Why does it look like brooks is not wearing trousers?

The page changes meaning when you think Jo isn’t wearing any pants. For me it was “Oh, so THAT’S why she was in the shadows.”

I received an eMail a weekend past, apparently from an old schoolmate I hadn’t heard from in years. It said that he and his family had been held up at gunpoint in Madrid, Spain. Their flight was leaving soon, but they were broke and had nowhere to go and no way to get home, and the Policia and Federales were less than helpful.

At first, I thought it was a pretty lame attempt to score a few bucks with a weak pity ploy. I even started to compose a reply eMail to the effect that bums in the city had been pulling that tactic on me for decades. Then I wised up and Googled a few keywords. Try “robbed at gunpoint” and “madrid spain”. 26,500 hits — most of them indicating it was a scam

One thing I noticed was that the scammer had used the acquaintance’s old, rather distinctive email address from years ago as the ‘From‘ address, but a ‘YMail’ account with his full name for the ‘Reply to‘ address. Apparently, they haven’t actually compromised his account; they’ve just stolen his identity — and his contacts list. The account I got the email on was my oldest; the one I used to sign up for our 20th reunion — back in 1995.

This type of scam has been going on for some years now. They hope they get your grandmother or someone who loves you, but doesn’t keep too close tabs on what you’ve been up to lately and who is not too Internet sophisticated, and that they will send the money.

as for the your iPod getting Jacked up you might try Rockbox, I did, and I noticed my Playlists didn’t change after that. It’s Very User Customizable, comes with a S***-ton of Games and Apps including a Word Processor and as long as you use formats it recognizes it will let you do just about anything. and it’s ALL Drag and Drop so you can even use it as an External Harddrive, they have instructions for Completing the transfer from PC, Linux, and Mac too I think. and if you aren’t satisfied, if memory serves they even have instructions on how to set it back.

As for the eMail hacked thing GOOD LUCK.

PS: I’ve even seen someone play a Version of the Original Doom on it. I know, nerd…I prefer the Blackjack personally.
