Dissidia, the “Final Fantasy Franchise Fighter”, intrigues me.  I haven’t played it, or even seen any video, I’ve only leafed through a partially destroyed strategy guide at a Wal-Mart.  It makes me think that one day, at the Sqeenix offices, they were throwing around ideas and decided it would be cool if they did their own Super Smash Brothers.  Characters from various game worlds thrown together with hilarious results.  (Tuesdays on FOX.)  I’m not falling for their trap like I did with Crisis Core though.  I’m waiting them out for a greatest hits price point.  The game has a strange aura of discount about it.  The internet wants me to believe that it’s one of the best PSP games EVAR, but the internet lies, and makes fun of us all in front of our backs.

At least part of why I don’t believe that Dissidia is going to be worth the 40 some odd dollars they want for it has to be the playable characters.  In a franchise that spans 13 titles, and a big handfull of spin offs, we’re given 22 avatars.  Maybe the desire for more characters is greedy, or even unreasonable, but the choices made leave me wanting.  That complaint is echoed, I would guess, by countless nerds across this lying, backstabbing, blackhearted internet.  The thing is that even within the 22 characters available there’s some overlap.  The heroes and villains in Final Fantasy have tended to be the same dude repainted with the brush from a new world.  So, if you line them all up this becomes more evident.  In the context of their own games it’s not so noticeable since they are surrounded by the other RPG archetypes.  Which is not to say that I don’t understand why the RPG uses the same archetypes over and over.  Everything does.  You have to start with your Skywalker and teach him stuff so that he can have his little hero’s journey.

Of course there’s a chance that they realized everything I’ve just said while they were making Dissidia and just said ‘fuck it’.  Someone at Squeenix already knows that every new hero is the same old hero with a new coat of paint.  Kingdom Hearts 2 has at least one scene I can think of that reveals that much.  Now that I think about it Kingdom Hearts has the same basic plot as Dissidia. (Or Smash Bros. Brawl for that matter.)   Heroes from across the dimensions save them all. (With magic Keys!)

That must be why they kept 12, and the tactics titles, out of the main story of Dissidia.  It’s really hard to tell the protagonists from those games apart.  I can’t even remember the name of the kid from 12…  Tidus 2: Tid harder?  Bathier was the real hero anyway.

Anyway, I guess what I’m trying to say is that I’d like a remake of Final Fantasy  6 for the PSP or DS, and that Sabin should have been in Dissidia.  I mean he’s already a fighter…  Also Tifa.

Well, at least it has ONE female protagonist…and I guess one female antagonist. Gender bias go!

And no, Balthier’s not in it. Which is quite unfortunate, all things considered. How can you have a game without the leading man?

Dissidia…my sister bought it. I was disappointed to hear that only a handful of characters were chosen. I was heart broken to hear that there was no Tifa, Yuna, or Rikku to play with either. =( *sniff*

I have Dissidia and I love it. A lot. I’m kind of glad for the smaller number of characters because trying get all 22 to level 100 is no small feat, unless you do the ExDeath trick, which I don’t because I’m stubborn. I’ve played for almost 50 hours now and I only have three characters at level 100. Despite the fact that the characters seem all kind of samish they all fight in very unique ways. When you play you won’t think of them as being the same.

Of course I’m a raging Final Fantasy Fanboy, so mayhaps I’m a little biased.

Yeah, I agree with you. I already played Dissidia, (Don’t ask me how I obtained it. Just the thought of it still gives me nightmares….) and, believe me, it’s not that great of a game… You have only 22 Characters, (Every hero and villain up to FFX, and shantotto from FFXI, and Gabranth, from FFXII, including Chaos. But you can’t play as that one) and no “normal” monster whatsoever. You see, in story mode, play on this board, and you have to kill CLONES of the characters, so you can destroy some other piece, so you can pass the level. Pretty shitty, if you ask me. Anyway, you have Brave points (which should be useless, in a normal fighting agme, but Square decided “Hey, you know what, let’s just fuck them up, and add this new thing that make their attacks crappy as hell, even if they’re level 2546), and HP. Even the summons are crappy. they only affect your BP. Even one of the coolest characters in the series (Ultros), get’s a crappy summon that hides your BP. He was one of my favourites…. Anywho, I do agree with you, and I think they should add more characters. Indeed, it would be nice to see sabin fighting Tifa, or Cyan fighting Auron. FFVI FTW!

does anyone know the name of that webcomic where the guy’s coat was so dirty that after his mom threw it out, it came to life? I remember they did paintball at one point, and the coat played by possessing someone and breaking there mind (which the coat did everytime someone put him on, unless that person knew his original owner, in which case he would increase their intelligence somehow.)

dissiada is ok game but for final fantasy fans only. I can agree that the roster is small, looking at the heroes, and villains different coat of paint make smaller. Don’t worry about being greedy I would love to see game on the PS3 instead of the PSP. as for more avatars forget the villains, I would rather see rest of cast of the like Barret, Tifa, Vivi, and the rest of the good guy.

Gravitational field….H2O you are a genius! That is why whenever someone (negi from negi sensei, for example?) in an anime trips, they land between the girl’s boobs! They are drawn there by the gravitational field! Or, ya know, they’re a perv.

If they opt to do an FF4 style remake of FF6… I only want it to happen AFTER they do an FF5 remake first. I will not accept them skipping FF5 or they’ll NEVER come back to it…

Besides, I want to put off the dreaded FF7 remake as much as possible…

You do realize that “I haven’t played it, or even seen any video, I’ve only leafed through a partially destroyed strategy guide at a Wal-Mart.” rendered the entirety of what followed meaningless, right?
