“I thought that when it was your time that you would be the one to hold the strings.” – Vito Corleone

It feels like Friday got here very fast. I guess because of the dust storms upsetting the balance of life.

I don’t feel like I have anything of value to impart right now, so I’ll leave you to your weekend. I hope it is enjoyable for you. Support links are above, below, and around. I hope to see you on Monday, until then, remember it was Barzini all along.

Last panel reminded me of that episode/clip of Trailer Park Boys where Ricky said “So I’m gonna pay you a hundred dollars to fuck off.”

I was a teenager in the 1980s, so the fist thing that popped into my head when I read the page title was Dire Straits singing, “You get your money for nothing and your chick’s for free.” And that brings up a discussion I had with my 12 year old niece about the song which lead to her comment that “it came out in the 1900s.” When people my age say “1900s,” we mean the first decade of the 20th century. When someone born after 2000 says “1900s,” they mean the entire 20th Century. Man, when did I get old?

And now you’ve got me thinking of the Weird Al (UHF) Beverly Hillbillies parody cover of money for nothing, as well as the bizarre CG animation for both videos (MTV and UHF). There are just so many words and images in that sentence nobody under 25 would recognize. I mean Weird Al is still kicking but that doesn’t mean they know who he is.

A coule of fun facts. When Al asked Mark Knopfler for permission to use the music, Knopfler agreed but only the condition that he’d play the guitar part himself. Fresh off a world tour promoting the “Brothers in Arms” album, Knopfler actually preferred his performance with Al to the original album cut.

When I talk about the so-called sixties, I now say the 1960’s, because the next sixties, the 2060’s, are now closer than the 1960’s.

Funny thing is that what he is talking about *is* how magic works, real magic anyways. Being able to read a person to direct them in ways you want is how many magic tricks work.

Yup, as a magician, I like to say that the term “misdirection” is a misnomer, because it makes people think it’s about making the audience looking away from the thing you don’t want them to look at, when really it’s about making them look at what you *do* want them to look at, which just happens to be somewhere other than where the magic is happening. Want them to look at your hands? You look at your hands. Want them to look away from their hands? Look them in the eyes, and they’ll look you in the eyes. This isn’t perfect as some people will burn your hands no matter what, but most people mirror instinctively, especially when they’ve bought into the idea that you are the one to listen to, which as the audience to your performance, they usually have.

Of course, there’s also a common joke amongst magicians about magicians being terrible at reading people, despite that being something we’re supposed to be trained to do, lol.

When you say “real magic” on the intenet, I won’t immediately know if you nean “stage magic” or “ritual magic” as in Wicca, black and white magic
