Ah yes…the “fake geek girl” phenomenon. Nice to see it actually acknowledged instead of buried in a smokescreen of righteous indignation that draws at least a few pages from #metoo and other such nonsense.

I endorse the notion of more opportunities for the awkward to meet, as I happen to be among the awkward myself. Being awkward is difficult, socially speaking.

It’s also interesting how Jessica has been an actual geek girl “since forever”, but very few actually believe that since she’s also hot. I’m not sure if that’s a commentary on judging a book by its cover (and the poor quality of such a plan) or one on the awkward getting jerked around and actively deciding They Would Not Be Tricked Again. Say that phrase with its capital letters and you’ll get the idea of the mental line drawn in the equally mental sand.

Either way, it’s a lot more thought than I expected to get out of a webcomic in the morning. Thank you for that.

“smokescreen of righteous indignation that draws at least a few pages from #metoo and other such nonsense.”

What.

I think he may subscribe to the incel-adjacent notion that women are treated better in society than men. Thus #metoo or attractive women having hobbies other than stereotypical ones comes across as fake, since to him women exist as baby factories that exist to exploit the ‘working man’ either that or he’s trolling, but I’ve seen people say that shit unironically.

I’m a firm believer in #metoo myself, but I’ve also seen many slimier types co-opt it in order to deflect legitimate criticism. All good causes have scum trying to take advantage of them, is what I’m saying, and that may or may not be what he was referring to.

The funny thing is that if I noticed a lot of guys women would say are “hot” now were actually geeks when they were younger. For a long time, they avoided their old geek habits because it wasn’t popular, and they’d rather be “acceptable” to society to get laid and be left alone.

Now, however, I see hot men entering the gaming space, and I see the same people who were all “FAKE GAMER GEEK” struggle to find a way to denounce the hot guys. Instead, they seem to be awkwardly, “I’m more willing to believe you were a gamer all along, but it makes me feel bad about my body,” suggesting.

Either way, it’s funny to me. Gamergate is having a huge struggle right now, and it’s amusing that they can’t decide how to continue being sexist/ableist/homophobic.

I can’t type this morning.

There’s a lot of men now who were nerds, worked out, got a mental and physical make-over, and became socially attractive. And they literally avoided their old habits to not get called out they did things like play video games and D&D. But now that it’s “in”, they are coming out of the woodwork, making it hard for the “all gamer girls are fake,” crowd to justify that same reasoning.

I agree. It is my biggest fear to be thought of as a fake nerd -__-;; I hate when it happens.

The last time someone called me a fake nerd, I thanked them for their concern and asked how I could contact the organization that had certified them as a Real Nerd, as well as what the qualifications required would be. They sputtered and cursed before leaving.

Honestly, the healthiest response is to…. just not give a shit.

If people want to gatekeep a hobby, they can fuck right the hell off.

You know what? Everyone is a nerd in some capacity. You’re not fake – there’s gotta be something you do that’s super nerdy.

Like my BIL. He played football all the way through college being a star player and everything. Then a few years later, after graduating and becoming a pharmacist for the military, he started participating in fantasy football leagues. To the point he has an equation and a formula for winning against other fantasy football people. He literally does MATH and tracks STATISTICS on a program I made him that has graphs and an image database of the top players and their stats. He only said I was a D&D nerd once, and then I turned and pointed at his office, full of graphs and pictures.

Sports people are huge frickin’ nerds. Fantasy sports people even more nerdy than that. It’s more than a hobby – it’s a lifestyle for them. So no one can be a “fake” nerd because everyone is a nerd in one way or another.

“Co-opted by the mainstream” is part of the same problem. Nobody stole anything, the barriers for what you’re “allowed” to like if you’re a certain “type” of person are just coming down.
