I just started another reread and I can’t believe this is how Mike is introduced.
Obviously, in our real world he lasted way more than six months, since it’s 2026 now, and this was published in 2007.
I like to think he learned enough to last more than six months even in whatever universe this comic is taking place in. Nearly all my favorite comics essentially inhabit alternate universe like Philip K. Dick’s “The Man in The High Castle.”
But I must admit I really have no idea how much time has passed since these strips “really” happened in that universe, but I know for sure it’s nowhere near 20 years.
