I kind of want to talk about this scene, but also not put my authorial stamp on it so that people won’t guess. So much more thought went into this than might be obvious to some. How about this? Skip the next part if you don’t want me to influence your take on this page.

Okay, so, in the first panel Mike releases Jess from his grasp and pulls away, but Jess doesn’t recoil at all. She stays exactly where se was because she felt zero threat from Mike. Maybe that’s confidence in herself, or maybe her read on Mike being no threat in any meaningful way. Instead of maintaining the distance he gave her she leans in. Then she initiates touch a second time since their encounter started. It’s a playful elbow jab, but still contact. On the previous page she touched his arm, which is her signaling that it’s okay to give comfort physically with her. I’m not 100% sure but I think Jess is the most likely to initiate touch out of any character. She’s the most likely to passively, or intentionally, invite it as well. Not counting characters who are in romantic relationships already. It wasn’t really intentional, but something about her character makes it seem correct when I write and draw her. She likes touch, or closeness, or skinship. However you want to characterize it. I think part of why she acts the way she does is not feeling like she’s cared for the way she wants. Jess would probably be happiest if she could go to sleep in a bed full of her closest friends. It’s not exactly being needy though. She’s fine by herself, but if she’s given a choice she would choose being in a big, close, group. It’s maybe more thought than needed for a scene like this. I’m not sure. It seems correct to me though.

I got my cameras and stuff out and filmed some things. Mostly because I wanted to be able to give myself permission to open a box. The very first thing that happened was the robot vacuum broke the tripod I was using and slammed my camera onto the floor. I kind of cobbled the tripod back together well enough to film as best I could. After I was done I made an effort to repair it with plastic weld, but it didn’t seem to be taking very well. I can try other things if it doesn’t hold. My hope was that the plastic weld would make it nearly as strong as it was before. It can do that depending on the nature of the plastic you use it on. It’s not like the tripod was all that expensive, plus parts of it were already broken, but why pay for a new one when you can potentially repair it, right?
As far as the filming is concerned I don’t think it went well, but I learned a little so that’s something.

I guess I’ll leave it there for now. I have some things I need to do. Hopefully you’ll have a nice Wednesday and Thursday and we can meet back here again on Friday to see how things went. Until then, six frightful figures in every can!
