Those of you who have been here a long time will know that I have a handful of stories I tell over and over. A few weeks ago, when this stress induced insomnia started, I was doomscrolling Reddit and happened upon a “thread” about paranormal encounters that “convinced you ghost were real”. My story wasn’t really that, but I was looking for anything to get my mind off of things, so I told the one about getting struck by an unseen force. It’s not really a spooky tale and I think that’s part of what makes it come across as genuine. Anyway, there wasn’t a lot of activity in this “thread” but the next day I got contacted by someone who wanted to tell the story on their podcast. That kind of thing is really big on youtube right now so I guess various channels peruse Reddit looking for content to fill time. I agreed to let them present it on their program since there isn’t really anything to stop them from just taking it anyway. It has already been published on other shows way back in the early 2000nds anyway. This time I asked for the story to be attributed to me by way of a link to the comic, if it didn’t break up the flow of the presentation. As far as I know it hasn’t been featured yet. Over the next few weeks one person appeared in my DMs to ask for the same thing and I said yes to all of them with the same attribution request. Only one of them actually told me what their channel was called, and I had actually seen it in search results, but I wasn’t familiar with it. There is not paranormal podcast that I know of where the host has a really good voice. Some are okay and some are just bad. On top of that many of them are barely literate and mispronounce words that I would consider common like “duvet”. I understand that sometimes you only ever hear a word spoken so when you see it in print you may not know how to pronounce it, but… c’mon. That kind of thing is so extremely common with youtubers it really disheartens me. People just do not love language anymore. I don’t pretend to be an expert on linguistics but there’s so much richness and nuance available to you in your communication if you delve into vocabulary a little. I guess you could call that a pet peeve. It’s funny because mom gets annoyed with me when I say guillotine incorrectly, which I do because the incorrect way is way more common to hear and I tend to default to what I hear if I’m speaking casually. (Just as an aside, it’s strange how often she and I bring up the guillotine in casual conversation. The fact that it’s enough for this to be a “thing” between us is a bit worrying now that I think about it…) I always correct her when she says “warsh” instead of wash, which is almost always the case. Anyway, all that aside, at some point in the future my simple ghost story may, or may not, feature on several podcasts all at once. If any of them bother to tell me I’ll drop a link or something. As I say, many of you will have read the story here before but still, it might be fun.
The linguistics thing puts me in mind of some genealogy stuff mom has told me a few times. On her side of the family, at one point, one of our relations was a US senator. I forget his name at the moment, but he was very popular and successful. An educated man. I think he founded a town maybe, or the post office in a town? I forget the details because she has told me a massive amount of stuff over time and I’ve never been good at remembering names. I think he was the one who went blind, which is a problem in our family, and he had surgery to correct it somewhat. That was way back in time, like, 100 years maybe? So you know it had to have been harrowing. Anyway, I bring him up because at some point our family on that side was well off and erudite. Then you move on to my great grandmother, by way of my grandfather, and she presented herself a dirt farmer with of particular wit. A trait that she passed on to my grandfather and his siblings to various degrees. The thing is it wasn’t that they were dullards, but they had all been convinced that they were on some level. Someone had instilled in them a negative mindset that festered and I wonder where it started. There are gaps in our knowledge of what happened between having a senator in the family to becoming poor schmucks. That negative mindset has been waning in the last couple of generations generally and our natural charm and intelligence has begun to reassert itself in my various cousins. I’m very curious about who it was that broke the chain though. I hope mom finds out more of this family history so the mystery can be solved in my mind.
Her final radiation treatment is tomorrow. Chemo is not scheduled yet. She is holding up well enough in spite of having balance issues and nausea, in addition to it also being tiring. Your continued prayers are appreciated. It makes her feel good to know that people are interceding on her behalf. It’s strange how many people have randomly offered up advice and support who have no connection to me whatever. I will often ask eBay sellers about the history of the items I have bought and recently these interactions have escalated into conversations where they haven’t usually in the past. In these cases the seller has been a cancer survivor and they have given me tips about getting through it not only fer her but also myself. It just strikes me as strange that it would start happening when it hasn’t in the past. It’s also a bit concerning how many eBay sellers are cancer survivors… It’s statistically concerning.
Anyway, I guess I’ll leave it there. I hope you have an nice Wednesday. If you find value in my work I would very much appreciate it if you would peruse the various links where support can be offered. I’m told the economy is doing well, but I’m certainly not feeling it… I’ll be back on Friday with another page. Until then, enjoy the long lasting flavor.

So none of the workers at this store can date each other? I keep forgetting about that.
None of the workers are supposed to date each other. They’ve proven very much that they can.
“Pedant the First”
The name checks out.
Thanks, I got a good laugh out of the technical correction.
I mean that is the technical rule for most of corporate America, it’s just everyone kinda looks the other way unless there is a disparity of level in the corporate ladder, which is probably why it is blanket statement against the rules, so as to not create a situation if two equal level coworkers start dating through work then one gets promoted causing a now conflict of interest where your partner is either your direct subordinate or supervisor which can and usually does lead to favoritism even if unintentional or simply perceived by others. Thanks for attending my ted talk on “rules are the guard rails of life, guiding you away from throwing yourself off the cliff of punishment”
It’s pretty common for fraternization to be just blanket banned for a variety of reasons, although the power dynamic thing is the most legitimate one. But a lot of companies instead just have a rule to require reporting your fraternization so it’s on file somewhere with HR, with the idea of preventing issues such as power dynamic things, or other similar issues like couples distracting each other because they’re on the same team and flirting with one another instead of working. I think the idea is that if they ban relationships entirely, that people will just sneak around and then if problems crop up, the company is blindsided, meanwhile if they encourage people to report their relationships themselves, then A, they only need to do anything about it if a problem actually arises, and B, they can get ahead of any problems by trying to ensure that if one of them is promoted, they stay out of the direct chain of command of the other, or can find ways to set it up so the two are never working alone on a project together so there’s less temptation to distract each other when they’re supposed to be working.
Not saying I agree with the practice, per se, I’m generally of the opinion that so long as we aren’t doing anything against the rules during work hours or on company property, then it isn’t the company’s business what we may or may not be doing in our personal time, but I can understand the logic of it.
Honestly most of what dating adds is off the clock anyway. Me and my work buddies routinely goof off after things slow down, and workplace disputes between former buddies have caused drama on the same level as anything romantic could.
People are just squeamish about the mushy stuff if you ask me.
Working at a state run psychiatric facility in a small town, managing relationships was a constant issue. We ran on a dual supervision model with administrators taking care of the paperwork stuff and clinical supervision trickling down through the physicians and department heads. The rule we followed was you can’t be in a relationship with anyone in your administrative supervision line. If the person you were having a relationship was in another department, another clinical program or was your peer it usually wasn’t a problem. If there was an administrative conflict One or the other partner was usually able to move to a different program (supervisory line). We had couples all over the place including administration. Given our workforce pool, it was really the only way to make it work. There were a number of “power couples” in administration of which my wife and I were one. It worked well until it didn’t. We had a psychiatrist and a rehab supervisor who started dating. Each, on their own was a functional enough employee but together they were a train wreck. It didn’t help that psychiatrists, due to being difficult to recruit, were high value employees who could get away with more crap than anyone else. As a result I have sympathies on both sides of the fence.
The power dynamic thing is one reason, but there’s other reasons.
When the relationship sours, and it almost certainly will because you only present your public face at work, so it’s almost literally dating under false pretenses and a relationship needs honesty and communication to maintain itself, it’s going to affect the whole office.
People take sides, who was ‘right’, who was ‘wrong’, the drama escapes, it becomes break room gossip. Bottom line is that it affects performance, and that’s what the C-Suite Executives don’t want.
Admin and HR don’t care, until it affects performance. Then the rules, already in place that you signed and agreed to mind you, will suddenly become relevant and the legal reason for your discharge with cause.
Break room gossip can be even worse than the actual power dynamic problem. I dated a girl at work and I didn’t know that my boss had been trying to date her for a while before I became part of the picture…he found out I beat him to it and I was the one facing the sexual harassment speech and she was coming to save me from the “knight in shining armor” boss…power corrupts…and the people sorting it out don’t care as long they aren’t personally involved…by the same line of thought I worked with a different woman who was totally radioactive….she openly said that if she didn’t get what she wanted from the boss she’d just scream sexual harassment among other dumb things…thus companies just get tired of it and write shotgun rules to deal with brain surgery issues….
I can already feel the brain cells dying from exposure to all the stupid I’ve dealt with in my own life…
Your art style has changed a lot, but Jess’ sideburns were clearly always part of the plan! All the characters have unique hair, but I’ve always loved the girls’ in particular. The fact that Carol, Alex and Rulette are such different redheads is really fun. And the girly sideburns always gave me Princess Peach vibes. Anyway, thanks for keeping our webcomic plates full all these years!
Ride in front? “E.L. phone home?”
“Ride on her motorcycle”, Ed?
I can’t tell of that’s still an innuendo.
Why not both?
Ed ride in front?…and miss the perfectly good chance to spoon Nina all the way there?…nevermind the opportunity to have his arm wrapped around Nina delivering his hands all over her front?…
Oh ye of the clean minds….lol
And of course the thrill as she “cranks that hog”.
What?
*Snrrrk*
Bwa, ha, ha!
:D
Continuing the language thread.
I know it’s common usage, but someone should point out to Ed that it is physically impossible for Nina to bring him to the ceremony. She can only take him. In traditional usage, “bring” is to go from there to here, “take” is to go from here to there. In other words, they’d have to be at the ceremony for her to bring something.
My other pet peeve is using “can” instead of “may.”
Actually I think it still counts because, he is speaking in future tense about a place Jess is going to be in the future in relation to the place where he is going to be in the same said future…
Continued bests to your mom with her treatment, and and hope you get those family tree answers – I’m always a sucker for stories with unlocking family history that is unknown or forgotten.
I’ve got a few years to catch up on. might as well start over reading the comic lol. previous computer died. bookmarks didn’t travel over blah blah. took grrlpowercomic’s comic scroll advert on its site to pull yours up to give me a link again.
Welcome back wilder…I been on That same ride a few times myself…lol
Soooo… we finally get to meet the legendary Mama Boothe?
VERY INTERESTING!
Hee,hee, hee!
The character on Laugh-in, in the soldier-looking outfit, still exists in pop culture. I love it. :D
Remember folks- you need [the consent] of your girlfriend or significant other…before your motorcycle-erotic-shenanigans begin, or before your other shenanigans begin.
Once you both get each other’s consents-then please feel free to do all of your shenanigans. See you later.
My wife passed three weeks ago. And… you talking about your mom helps. I have enjoyed your comic for several years.
I’m glad to know I was able to ease your suffering in some small way. I have found that there isn’t any particular series of words that can convey sympathy for another’s loss adequately. I hope you can find a continuing measure of solace wherever you may find it here.
