I’ve been having a hell of a time sleeping recently. Getting my pillow nest into a configuration that doesn’t leave me in pain hasn’t been working. At the same time I’ve been waking up rested enough to go about my day mostly unfettered. Yesterday though my neck was so messed up I was really struggling. The distance from my head to the end of my shoulder is a non standard pillow distance, so I’m perpetually trying to prop my head up with random objects. Recently I can’t find a damn thing that makes up the weird difference between my existing pillows and the floor. I’m starting to think I need to make an Egyptian style head platform that is adjustable. Put a little crank on the side so I can rotate it up and down to suit the condition of my body on any given night. Lately when I get up my sternum, ribs, and shoulder crack really loudly. I guess it’s good that they just snap back into place now, but it’s hard to feel good about waking up sounding like someone walking across a forest floor. I’ve woken up with tension shakes a couple of times recently, but since I’ve been walking and whatnot there’s no shortness of breath, so it’s like this weird kind of half version of things. Not that it’s bad for it to be like that, it’s just unfamiliar to me. Apparently I hurt my hip a little bit so I can’t lay down with a pillow under me like I like to normally. Sometimes when that happens I can ease into it, but this time it feels like my hip is going to tear off, so I’ve had to just lean into the wedge pillows I prop myself up with. It makes me feel like I’m doing some kind of sideways planking. One of my wedges needs replaced. Or at the very least I need to find a new covering for it. I don’t think they sell them separately though. It feels like a waste to just throw out a wedge of foam that’s still basically fine though. I can’t lay directly on it because it does leave foam dust on things now, and I don’t want to get it all in a blanket. Really I should just accept that it’s basically reached the end of its operational lifespan and fork out the 40 bucks for a new one, or whatever it is now. It’s not like I’m the most frugal person in the world, I just hate not using something until it’s completely spent. The fact that it’s still basically intact is blinding me to the fact that it is crumbling to dust and probably a danger to my lungs at this point. These are the kinds of banal struggles I go through.

I can sympathize with your sleep troubles. I prefer a firm pillow, but after a while they still go flat. My solution has come to using two slightly flat pillows instead of one big firm pillow. May I suggest finding a fitted or flat twin sheet to use as a wedge cover, either just wrapped around or pinned to shape. I know my store sells the sets cheaply enough, and even available with favorite cartoon characters (one of my pillows has a Bluey pillowcase, that we sell separately).

A few years back, I had the pleasure to discover the Purple pillow. Those things cost like a bastard. But they are almost terrifyingly comfortable and hold their shape for YEARS.

Yay fellow Purple people! Yes they make pillows, seat cushions, wrist supports mattresses etc. Haven’t worn out at All here and had mine (first three) for near a decade now.

Hi Jacky, Just a thought, but could some kind of (self)inflatable pillow or neck rest (or even a ‘donut pillow’) be (at least párt of) a solution for your current pillows problem? …Simply inflating or deflating it to adjust the support needed must surely be easier (let alone far more comfortable) than some kind of (wooden?) head platform with a crank?!
