Didn’t seem like a stray to me, but an intended bullseye. I’d tell him to stop being a doofus, but he has a goatee so it’s sort of required.
She’s calling him out, but she’s a lot less mean about it than a lot of other characters would have been.
That’s what makes the calling out all the more painful, I’m betting. No hostility in her voice, just truth.

Crying shame how seldom we’re actually attracted to the “perfect” one.
If it had been me I probably would have been attracted to her but to dense to tell she was interested.
this is an odd one for me as I am with the ‘perfect’ girl right now?
I am poly and was dating two girls, one who was toxic as hell but fun physically in a ‘tries too hard to be a pornstar’ pick-me way..that I eventually broke it off with. And one who meshed with me damn near perfectly that I..don’t really find PHYSICALLY attractive much? We are best friends but we don’t really engage intimately that often, but everything else is so good we just don’t really CARE?
We are happy, and while sex is NICE it’s hardly the main goal. We are still together, it’s stress free, we never want for much. Just physically there isn’t much spark, which is funny because we are both generally attractive? We joke about it being a pheromone thing or something

Ah, thanks! I scrolled through hundreds on hundreds looking for it but managed to ignore the Sick Day and Times Between entries.
And now I’m rereading the puppet ones and I want a felt job.
Why do you say that? Legitimately curious, because I don’t really see it.
She has possibly the highest Emotional Intelligence of any character we’ve met, which John is in serious need of, because he’s pretty much been running on lust or regrets.
Maddison, whilst she might not be a perfect long time love, is the perfect foil making getting John to mature, whilst at the same time helping her to figure out what it is that she ultimately needs as she’s also quite an instinctive creature.
Summing things up this way makes me think that they’re in danger on replicating monke sex if they’re not careful
