Welcome to the new week. I hope your weekend was pleasant. Mine was fine. I moved things from one place to another and am not sure if I gained anything by doing so, but it felt like accomplishment. Since I’m nearly 30 minutes late posting tonight I’ll leave it at that. I hope to see you on Wednesday. Until then, white oval scored.

She really did get straight to the point. Although I find it funny that John’s hung up on Alex (he really needs to let go) but Maddison isn’t hung up on Reggie, remembering that she clung to him like a puppy at first.
Why should he let go? He could fight for her.
That basically never, ever works (like, even in fiction it’s… generally a bad shout), and makes you look like an arrogant, selfish piece of crap into the bargain. It’s predicated on a) thinking the woman in question must be too weak/ stupid to decide for herself; b) assuming she’s unhappy with her choice and doesn’t know it, the poor idiot; c) you yourself are ‘better’ for her based on… presumably just your own assessment, and the corollary of that, d) the other guy is some kind of douche or just inferior to you somehow, because you say so. Because it suits you to think so, and bolster your baseless fantasy about being with the girl you like but is with someone else.
Reggie is a douche, and I kinda hate that the wealthy guy beat the working class guy for the rich woman. I don’t care how much character growth he’s gotten. John is a better person.
Fine, so John shouldn’t fight for Alex. How long will it take for them to break up? 20 years?
The definitions of words has drifted since I was young. John isn’t what used to be called working class, he’s unskilled labor. Reggie is working class because his family money comes from physical labor. Alex’s money is white collar since her money comes from office work. Most people don’t seem to know that blue collar work is extremely profitable now though. The richest person in Wichita, Kansas was a plumber the last time I checked. If you want to make a good living there’s insane levels of opportunity in skilled labor right now.
Hmm, blue collar work always meant physical labor when I was a kid, which could be anything from janitor to electrician, as all of them wore jumpsuits, aka, the eponymous “blue collar.” My grandpa worked the assembly line at GM, my dad was a mechanic, etc. But I can understand saying John isn’t “working class” since that usually meant at least a respectable job and not a starter job stocking shelves or flipping burgers.
Skilled tradesmen (plumbers, electricians, HVAC techs, etc) are currently in high demand and short supply. If you don’t mind getting your hands dirty you can make a pretty comfortable living.
Ironically, if he did fight for her, and Alex left Reggie to be with John because he made a big display of affection or something, it would just prove she deserves neither of them. A person who dumps you because they “find someone better” didn’t deserve you, or the other person. Like, imagine adopting a dog, and then giving the dog back because you found another dog somewhere else who was just a little closer to the exact breed of dog you wanted–such a person shouldn’t have ANY dog, because they only care about themselves and what the dog means to THEM, and not for the pup itself. I have personally been in the situation of being interested in a woman who was unhappy and in a clearly failed marriage (they did in fact separate not long after), but even then, no good can come from actually trying to insert yourself into that.
Fine.
Then how are John and Alex supposed to get together, and how are Reggie and Alex supposed to break up? It feels like years since John’s even talked to Alex.
“Then how are John and Alex supposed to get together[?]”
They aren’t? It takes two people wanting to get together for people to get together. John alone doesn’t count, and neither does John + you lol.
I gotta disagree here, people aren’t dogs and relationships aren’t adoptions. Alex, and anyone else, should choose the person that is the best fit for them. The important distinction here is that *Alex* should choose, and given that she has – at least for the time being – John is being a bit of a dick for believing he knows better. And should something change to where she does prefer John (or simply not Reggie), that can be sad and painful for him, but it cannot be *bad* for him because it’s freeing him from a relationship with a partner who chooses someone else.
Maddison: not very bright, but VERY insightful.
Guessing shes a low Int, High Wis build :p
Not the attributes *I’d* focus on to describe her build, but I do understand what you’re saying.
Vast tracts of ‘charisma’? :D
Whaddaya doing, John? Ain’t no good gonna come of this. You’re a handsome dude, find another lady.
2 for 2, Maddison. Careful now, someone might think your lower intelligent remarks are just a ruse to catch people off guard.
‘Oh, I’m full now. Let’s get in the hot tub, John!’
Always appreciate the comic Jackie. Not always conscious enough to say
I find it ironic going from Alex hanging with Reggie (and Carol and the others) to seeing John looking her. Almost like Alex hasn’t been kind to him, even as a friend. I’m probably wrong.
I mean, what is their ‘friendship’ even, again? Haven’t they interacted like a handful of times, on each of which John’s comparative lunkheadedness makes Alex condescend to and chide him in her smiling way even more than she does everyone else? John’s just too simple to get that they’re a terrible match, if anything. John would be better off with someone happy-go-lucky and chill; Alex is way too tied up in ‘presenting’ her eliteness, whether of education/ intellect or fortunate upbringing. It underlies virtually everything she says and how she interacts with everyone else.
John knew Alex from before the comic started, as Alex already had a crush on him from day one. I’ve never seen Alex worry about “presenting” anything, she just IS an educated and intelligent person who speaks like one and tries to share her perpective. Nothing wrong with being proud of your family, especially when many family members have died and you want to honor their memory. Thomas and Reggie are the ones who like to razz on people for being less intelligent than they are. John is already fairly happy-go-lucky and chill; he needs someone to temper his goofy attitude with calm control. Not Alex though, because John clearly isn’t attracted even if he’s trying to overcome that.
…that is some disturbing level insight right there.
Seeing these two together made me dig into the archives because I didn’t know that John and Maddie would be getting lunch together, or also that John was still this hung up on Alex.

Huh. That’s generous of her.
I think she’s saying: [I’ll put my small pizza aside, + buy a larger pizza for both of us.].
That’s nice of Maddie.
Place your bets on her telling him Victoria likes him.
