I like the idea that Evrina has trouble maintaining her abrasive personality when directly interacting with Jo. Jo passively gets past her defenses with a Care Bear stare while not actually saying anything. Most people have many faces they wear from day to day, or moment to moment. Evrina is no different. She tries to dominate any space she enters as a preemptive defense mechanism. If she starts out in control only the most confident people would be likely to resist. Humans generally avoid conflict and will default to following whoever establishes dominance first. Jo, however, has a quiet confidence that doesn’t require validation and a natural sincerity that gets past people’s defenses.
There are just some kinds of people in the world that trigger the humanity in others almost without effort. Honestly, I wish there were more.

I’m not sure what I’m allowed to talk about concerning the last couple of days in my personal life, so I’m just going to say that it’s been a bit much. Those of you who frequent the discord will know what I’m talking about. It really threw how isolated I am into very stark contrast. I’ve been left on edge and bruised emotionally.

Just as a historical note Gene Hackman and his wife were found dead a day ago, having apparently been dead for some time already. As of the time of this writing questions remain, but it’s a very tragic end to one of the world’s best actors. I tend to remember Hackman as Lex Luthor from the Superman movies of the 80s. They aren’t his most award winning performances, but his version of Lex is cartoonishly memorable and fun to watch.

Anyway, I will let you go for now. I hope you have a nice weekend and will see you on Monday with more low stakes adventures. Until then, release the hounds!

Michelle Trachtenberg also died yesterday. I remember her mostly as Nona F Mecklenberg on Pete & Pete, with Iggy Pop as her dad. She was also on Clarissa Explains it All.

She was only 39, too. I remember her most for playing Buffy’s “sister”, Dawn, on Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

I remember the Buffy series quite well. In my movie review days, I covered a movie Amber Benson did. She gave me a quote for a book line I never released. Those were the good old days.

i mainly know her as Harriet the Spy and from Eurotrip. im 2 years older than her, and have many health issues, so its sad and scary at the same time

Jo basically is a human puppy…and is 100% going into Evrina’s comics, I’m sure.

And I can’t help but laugh that the woman whose default is to immediately put everyone else on the defensive, is wondering why she couldn’t get someone to lower their defenses. I guess I can’t laugh too much, most people do that to a degree, but she’s just so over-the-top with her attitude, deliberately TRYING to get other people to clam up, that it’s amusing to see her stymied by her own success.

I say this, as a man. A man who has been ‘caught’ not meeting eyeline before, the first time almost 45 years ago in high school. I know women are Venus and men, Mars, but being that Jo is a lesbian, I find myself wondering how she is able to remain completely on target staring into Evrina’s eyes and not what ends up behind the shield…

Wait she puts on a mask? So does this mean she’ll be doing crazy cartoony things like Jim Carrey?

There’s an interesting thought process. Who among this cast would be the best /worst to wear The Mask? (From the Comic books)

Best = can handle it and use powers for good.
Worst= Mask takes over fully.

IMO-
BEST- likely Carol, because she seems to be the best at: middle-management, negotiating, commands, + crisis management,
and

[Maybe not the worst, but maybe…The Most Unfortunate]:

Maddie…because she might use the mask’s powers to just- make a Beary Fun-Bears Army, and to make a giant mountain of pizzas,…just for her own entertainment.
Hmm.

I’m just guessing, but I think: after Evrina’s, very-good friend, Alex’s sister, passed on- that Evrina uses [anger, aggression, + insults, + other stuff], when she, 1] finds a problem, or 2] finds someone she thinks is confrontational, or annoying. She might not be over her loss of her friend, yet.

It sounds sort of like a tactic of- “I am facing a person or thing, who might- [challenge me, insult me, or verbally hurt me]. But I can fight them off, or shield myself from them, [by being aggressive to them first, or by being insulting to them, first…”, or some kind of tactic like that.

I like it at the end, when Evrina is revealing something that makes her feel sad or disappointed, that- she puts the serving tray in front of herself.
…As in- maybe she’s putting the tray in front of her, in order to [shield] herself.
Cool. :)

I also like Gene Hackman, in the superman films.
I also like him in: The French Connection, Young Frankenstein, + in other films like that.
He did a [few comedies], I think.
