The title of this page is so ridiculously obscure I wonder if anyone will recognize the reference.

Scott Lake, or Lake Scott as some call it apparently, is a real place. I generally don’t tie things in the comic to actual places, but I felt like I could go ahead with it this time. If memory serves, it is a man made lake that was constructed in the 20s. My memory of it is so vague I could tell you little more abut it than it is a body of water, somewhere in Kansas, near Scott City. I haven’t been there in decades. The only thing I really remember about ever going there was seeing a venomous water snake. In any event, you can go there if ever you have a mind to, and pretend that you were in the same place as the cast, and maybe see a venomous water snake.

Additionally, I genuinely wonder if people remember either of the movies mentioned. In recent years it very much feels like there is no longer a cohesive pop culture, so it’s possible that no one reading has seen either film. I suspect that at least a few of the older commenters have, but I don’t know it for sure. In fact, I have never seen Goodfellas all the way through. I’m simply aware of the important scenes via cultural osmosis. It seems like a decent film, but I’ve seen several documentaries about the people it is based on so I generally get the concept. In any case I’m wrapping up these little plots more or less so I can wrap up the date and move on from there. Which is not to say I won’t pop in on other characters to break monotony, but the actual problems are resolved as far as they can be at this point.

What is not resolved is the perpetual need for money, which brings us to the reminder that you can support these efforts via the links above. Although, as I’ve often said, I understand that these are increasingly dire times. At any rate next week is a week with at least some level of annoying things I have to do, so I’m really glad that I’ve timed needing to draw a lot of new stuff so perfectly with having less time to do so. I am a fucking genius.

Anyway, I hope you have a safe weekend. God willing I will see you on Monday as always.

So kind of like the Big Lebowski then?

No woman has ever seen that movie.

My significant other would disagree

You should make sure she’s a woman. Intrusively.

I, also, am a female who has seen (and enjoyed) The Big Lebowski many a time! But who knows if I’m trustworthy

Seeing a lot of claims, but not a lot of proof this evening…

I also watched it and I’m female. My friends have pretty much always been male so I tend to do more “guy stuff” than most women. That said, it was forever ago and I barely remember the movie, so not sure I’m much use where proof is concerned, haha.

My oldest niece and her husband both love that movie… they watch it religiously every March 6th (Dude’s Day)

*raises hand* Another she/her in the aforementioned older contingent of commenters who has seen the Big Lebowski, and Smokey & the Bandit for that matter. (My taste does not run to Goodfellas, so have never seen that one.) Hope you’re having a decent weekend.

Also, you’re going to have to take our word on our stated genders, as is only polite these days. Again, since you’ve invoked the elder contingent, any call of ‘show us yer tits!’ will be met by, “Oh yeah? Well, here they are” followed by a Terry Gilliam-esque animation of my attempts to find where gravity has taken them this time, as I rummage around in the various sub-basements of my body, muttering.

Well, I’ve not seen GoodFellas, but I’m very much a fan of Smokey and the Bandit, and I’ve been told I’m good at doing the voice of Sheriff Buford T. Justice…

I just watched Smokey and the Bandit on Netflix maybe a week ago! It was a blast! A lot of those old movies don’t hold up bc they’re too racist or sexist oe whatever, but that one was mostly just fun! I’m glad to have seen it!

I have to wonder if you saw an edited version. My memory of it is that there is at least one hard R in there. Pretty sure there’s a scene where Justice gets screwed over for being openly racist to a black officer too.

The film is actually pretty well known for having several versions with a variety of sound edits compared to the original (just a few examples: the horn of a passing truck obscures a “f*ck off”, “sumbitch” changed to “scum bum”, correct engine sounds replaced with uttery wrong ones) but I’m not aware of any visual edits in any version.

I can only say that I saw the version that’s on Netflix rn, and Netflix Finland, in case that makes a difference.

That said, I don’t mean to say there is no racism or sexism in the movie. Justice is extremely racist. But the movie itself didn’t seem to be promoting that, as Justice was an over-the-top silly villain.

I didn’t watch “Goodfellas”, but saw “Smokey and the Bandit” as a kid.
“Hi guy” doesn’t ring a bell, though.
“Big Lebowski” (mentioned in comments) sort of does – I heard the title, but never got around to watching it.

“I’m really glad that I’ve timed needing to draw a lot of new stuff so perfectly with having less time to do so.”

Maybe you could make an interlude where Alex and Carol have a discussion about Nina. That seems like something they should do in any case if they keep spending more time with each other.

When you brought up Scott Lake, I was like, no, it couldn’t be that one. I know it well. It’s got some fascinating history around it too. Specifically the one I love is Battle Canyon. The Northern Cheyanne were escaping Oklahoma Territory, trying to get north and merge with another tribe’s reservation. Cheyanne Autumn is a great book that describes the whole event. Anyway, they got to the canyon where there’s a small cave that they took shelter in. Around the parameter of the canyon you can still find the riffle pits that they dug in order to ambush the U.S. Cavalry who were trying to kill/capture them. The book is definitely worth the read. Do not watch the movie though, it’s your typical Holywoodized version of the events.

I’ve definitely seen Goodfellas. I’ve also seen a lot of other mobster movies and could not tell you which scenes or actors were in that one in particular.

I’ve heard of Smokey and the Bandit but don’t really know anything about it beyond that it’s a film that exists.

I’ve seen both, but I’m pretty old. Both are good movies but for different reasons. Goodfellas is one of the more entertaining Mob movies. Smokey and the Bandit is a fun car/truck chase movie. I recommend both.

The Red Buccaneer has one of the best chase sceens I’ve seen. It’sba cart chase, not a car chase. I saw the chase once in a movie review about 40 years ago, but have never managed to see the movie.

I haven’t seen either, but I know my Mom’s seen one of them because when we rescued a couple of cats 15ish years ago, she named one of them Bandit and referenced the title when she did so
