She just can’t help herself.

I have a modded Gameboy Advance. It’s backlit. Lack of backlighting was really the only flaw with the thing when it was originally produced. In my opinion the design of the GBA is the best version of the game boy in terms of ergonomics. It fit my hands quite well and the button placement was much better for most games that used shoulder buttons. I use it mostly for when I need a few minutes of something to do and am sick of looking at my phone. I could use my 3ds, but Nintendo, and other companies, won’t sell their fucking software to me on their download shop. I don’t want to play handheld games on the goddamn WiiU. For a company that hated piracy it’s insane how much Nintendo drives users to it. If I could find a decent flash cart for the GBA that would hold my entire library of games I would buy it. At this point I’m so frustrated with Nintendo dragging their feet that I have very little pity for then as far as lost revenue is concerned.

Anyway, I can’t find my copy of Tetris for the Gameboy. I know I have one, but I’ve stored it someplace and forgotten where. That caused me to learn about a game called Tetris DX. It looks like a very minor upgrade to the original Tetris, which is my favorite version. Unfortunately it has battery backup, so you have to find one with a working battery, or replace it. it’s not a super expensive game second hand, but there is that tiny issue. I know the batteries don’t last super long since all my old games that have them have stopped saving.

Gameboy Advance SPs are my favourite hand held system of all time. Never owned a regular Gameboy Advance but the SPs were a back lit update that play the same games. Great system got me through many a security guard shift with classic Mario games.

Honestly, you could just get a Supercard DSTWO for your 3DS. It has a decent GBA emulator written for it and I play my games on it that way all the time.

My only complaint with the GBA was that, since I have huge meaty claws, I had to prop the thing up with my pinkies to support it, and after a standard me-long period of play, my pinkies would start to ache from the act. A standard me-long period of play goes anywhere from an hour to six depending on how into whatever it is I’m doing I am at the time. I played a lot of Summon Night, Breath of Fire/BoF2, classic ports of older games (see: BoF or ALTTP), and the like.

When it comes to flash carts the best is the Everdrive GBA X5, and as for battery saves on actual carts you can just replace the battery easily, but you’ll lose a save if it’s on there.

Honestly anybody born before 1965 is probably capable of replacing the battery for less than $7.00 USD. Take. Yard-sale screw driver, cut a notch in the middle, Voila! You have the key to open it. Solder out the old battery, solder in the new battery, et Voy-la, less than 30 mins, less than ten bucks, ive done it for the college kids lots of times. Any of the new-kids into robotics, could also do it for on the cheap. No kidding, i can do it in 10 mins, cause i already bought the key at the hardware store.

Tetris DX was a very popular version of the game with new modes/options and stuff, but it’s missing the definitive Russian Tetris theme music so it kinda sucks to play. At least Tetris DS has it unlockable, as well as catchy Super Mario mixes in Marathon mode to make up for it until that point. DX is….well, musically disappointing by comparison to either.

I prefer the actual play style of the old version and usually am listening to something else while I play, so the music isn’t a big issue for me. I’m not really even worried about the save feature unless it has some kind of effect on game progression. I like the feel of the specific device I want to use and the enhanced visuals from the color mode would be a nice bonus. I could also just play old Tetris if I could remember where I put the effing thing…

The GBA had a great library of games.

I think it was also the only system to have a licensed port of Tales of Phantasia on it.
