1545 Sweet Dreams.

I’m going to do my best to describe Carol’s voice because I’ve never found a video of anyone who matches how she sounds in my head. It’s warm. Even when she’s angry. There’s no shrillness to it, but there’s clearly a wide range at her disposal. When she speaks it’s always clear, and you can tell she could get very loud if she wanted to. There’s that quality that people who sing regularly have of never sounding out of breath, like they have more control of the air they move in and out of themselves. In this instance she’s singing slowly, with the tone of a torch singer. The little wavy mark is where she’s holding the notes. I can hear her in my head so clearly that it’s frustrating I can never demonstrate it. I think that Carol is the voice my heart made up to sing songs I can’t, if that makes any sense.

If I were David Willis this would probably where I’d cut away to sell you a porn, and the next page would pick up as normal.

I’m sure you all hear the cast differently from me. Thomas would be the easiest to demonstrate, since I’ve always heard him in my own voice. Although what I hear is different than other people, since I’m riding in the machine. Recordings of myself don’t sound like what I sound like to myself obviously.

The cardinal versions of the male cast members tend to be those of my male friends. The girls aren’t, mostly because they’re too many people combined into new entities, so the voices don’t match anyone as strongly in my mind.

For the record, almost the entire cast have decent singing voices in my mind. Evrina never has, and Reggie tends not to sing, but he can. John isn’t very good because he doesn’t have much range, and Alex sounds awkward, but could be good if she practiced. Ed sounds like he’s terrified when he tries to sing, but his sister sings like she thinks she’s amazing. She’s average, but has a lot of heart. I don’t know if it’s weird to think about that for a comic, but I have. The perfect version of the world in my head has weird details like that worked out.

Reggie can play violin well, and a handful of other instruments passably, including bass guitar.
Nina can play guitar fairly well and the ukulele enough to accompany herself. She can also play a tiny bit of piano.
Carol can play guitar a bit and took enough piano lessons to play sheet music haltingly.
Mike can play the trumpet pretty well.
Jolene can play drums and most percussive instruments you’d find in a high school band room.
Alex can play the Piano well. To the point of a little bit of improv. (although I tend to forget this.)
Ed and Jess can play a little piano, and Jess can play a little guitar and bass.
Thomas can’t play anything, although he’s got a talent for it that was never explored.
John is terrible at reed instruments.

From your description, I think of Nicole Vega, Caro Emerald and Anias Mitchell for Carol. Especially Anais in Way down Hadestown and How Long.

Please [stop] this, Jackie.
This is too damn Romantic and cute. [ I must stop re-reading today’s page, before lots of cartoon hearts start appearing around my head]. :D

And if you were David Willis, this is where you’d decide that your characters were suitably happy enough to start tormenting them. But you wouldn’t do that, would you?

Look up the song spiderweb by Joan Osborn. In that song she speaks about a dream she had where Ray Charles gets his eye sight back, only to discover he’s lost his singing voice. The point is when you gain you might lose, and you never know what you’ve lost to gain something way better. I feel like this is case with Carol. She lost her dreams but gained Tomas.

I am thankful with every new comic that you AREN’T David Willis. I have some of these Thomas & Carol strips saved because they remind me so much of myself and my wife. Nothing I’ve read from Willis feels so true to life or so very worth my time each day. Keep being you, that’s enough.

I wonder if this would ft the bill? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xMCNmUaGko Probably not; I think Nataly uses ‘way too high a register, here. Maybe that husky, plummy voice Cass Elliott used for Dream a Little Dream of Me.

If you suddenly were to become David Willis, I would have to track you down and do unspeakable things to you. Never mind “There can only be one,” one Willis is one too many.

I can’t say anything about gymnastics in regards to body types, but being hefty never stopped people from dancing or even doing it well. Take Kirsty Ally during her stint on “Dancing with the Stars”: that woman became chubby as hell after her acting career waned, but damn, could she move that round ass with grace!

The point being that while you may not see her in gymnastics, there’s nothing to say that Carol couldn’t rock the dance hall if she practiced again. However, then there’s the matter of footwear…

You’re confusing fun times dancing with professional dancing. It’s still very rare to see someone on stage past a certain size. The roles for people like that are few. Any fool can dick around on a dance floor, getting paid to is something different.

There’s also belly dancing. Body size seems not to matter, just being able to move it. Go to any Ren Faire and witness the variety.

And you can get paid for it, they say.

All this talk about David Willis makes me think he’ll appear out of nowhere like Beetlejuice just for saying his name very often.

Maybe you, or someone else has said this, Jackie, but: if Jo’s movie project doesn’t work out, then these cast members could make, [a band], for a hobby, or as a sideline. Hm.

When I first imagined her singing, what came to mind was Zoey Deschanel, like how she was singing in Elf while in the shower.

Oh god, it’s getting even more adorable. That’s so cute and romantic. Thomas is a lucky man, and he definitely realizes it.

Bwa Ha Ha Ha

That song was forever altered for my by DBZAbridged. It can’t ever be heard without hearing, at least a little, the raspy creepfest voice of first form Cell.

Your blog for this post makes me appreciate the beginning posts with the unique fonts for each character’s voice. It really helped set the tone for every characters voice

I was thinking about people, who show you how really wonderful they are, or who put all of their enthusiasm into their art…when they sing, or do another form of their entertainment:

A current music expert said something like this once, about the 1960s singer, Janis Joplin:

“…Janice is not called, “beautiful”, by a lot of people…but she does become BEAUTIFUL when she sings.”
